Manners matter - printing etiquette
Consideration for others in the Edmonton workplace is just as important as outside the office. And it’s no different when it comes to printing. We all have experienced the frustration of someone else’s lack of etiquette. So what are some simple rules so you don’t get labelled as the ‘inconsiderate co-worker’ at the office?
Ink/Toner/Paper — don’t walk away when it runs out
Just like you wouldn’t borrow a car and return it with an empty tank, don’t walk away from a printer that’s out of fuel or paper if you’ve just used it. If the ink, toner or paper are out after your last print job has run, please restock the printer. If you don’t know how to replace the ink and/or toner, find someone who does.
Paper jam? Fix it
Sneaking out and leaving a paper jam behind is right up there on the list of office etiquette no-nos. They can be frustrating and time-consuming to fix but think about the next person. What if they’ve got a time-sensitive printing job and you've left them with a paper jam to deal with? Not a good thing to do.
Let anyone with a smaller print job go to the head of the line
Don’t you hate it when you’re at the grocery store and you’ve only got one or two items, and the person ahead of you in line has a cart that’s overflowing? And you’ve got to wait. And doesn’t it make your day when they tell you to go ahead?
Extend the same courtesy at the office. Someday it’s going to be you with a single copy to print, and someone ahead of you with a 75-page document print job. Who knows whether karma will kick in because you were courteous enough to let someone else go first the other day.
Pick-up your prints on time
We all know how frustrating it is to take your photocopies with you only to realize when you’ve walked all the way back to your office, that someone else’s prints are mixed in with yours. Now you’ve got to sort through both printing jobs and return to the printer. Again, it’s common courtesy — get your printing job in a timely fashion.
